WATCH REVIEW:

Citizen Men's BM8180-03E
Eco-Drive Canvas Strap Watch

Review Date: October, 30, 2012

Why I ordered this watch

After years of going without a watch I felt the need to return to using a simple wrist time keeper. I was tired of pulling out my smartphone everytime I just wanted to quickly check the time.

After researching watches for a few weeks I decided on the affordable Citizen Men's BM8180-03E Eco-Drive wrist watch for its basic features such as Luminous hands/dial, basic functions, reliablity and affordability.

Ordering
I ordered my Citizen Men's BM8180-03E Eco-Drive Canvas Strap Watch from Amazon.com on Sunday night, Oct. 21 and received the watch on Tuesday afternoon Oct. 23. I should mention I'm an Amazon Prime member. I paid a flat $87.00. You may find it cheaper elsewhere or on sale from time to time.

Appearance
The watch's appearance in my opinion has a very simple, straight forward classy and very functional look and feel to it. Some men my not like this watch due to the basic size of the crown which is 37mm in diameter and may seem less "masculine" to other larger 40mm to 48mm and larger size watches being marketed today. I believe the "U-Boat U-1942" watch sports a massive 64.4 crown diameter, would look like a wall clock laying on your arm I think. While I don't have a problem with the watch's size my fiancé described the watch as "cute."

Lume Display - Does it glow?
The Citizen BM8180-03E Eco-Drive comes with a lumed face, which means it has a glowing-luminous display, which works great compared to other similarly priced watches and head and shoulders above cheaper ones. Not only are the individual hour, minute and second hands lumed but the individual numbers and hour markers are lumed as well. The Citizen watch lume color is also unique, instead of glowing with the traditional fluorescent green color, which most lumed watches display, the Citizen glows with a nice rich blue hue as you can see in the photos, which are a fairly accurate representation. For some reason I prefer the traditional green lume on watches but the blue lume is a welcome change to mix it up a little.

Performance - Eco-Drive
This area is where the Citizen BM8180-03E truly shines with regards to performance and reliability. Time keeping is near perfect as far as I can tell without any change in time, losing or gaining seconds, at least for the week I've owned it so far. Many other affordable watches can gain or lose time +/- more than up to a minute each week which forces time adjustments at least every month to remain accurate. Adjusting the time, day and date is simple as pulling out the crown and turning it to desired time and date.

Probably the best feature the watch has is what Citizen calls the "Eco-Drive" which essentially means this watch is powered/recharged by light and will never need a battery replacement, very nice feature. The manual claims the watch will work 180 days on a full charge of light which is approximately 7 to 14 hours of outside sunny/cloudy light. Unless you wear the watch in extreme low-light conditions continuously you probably won't have any issues with keeping the watch charged. You can say goodbye to replacing your watches battery every 6-months to 2-years compared to other typical battery powered watches. Minor note, if for some reason you do need to recharge you watches battery Citizen does not recommend placing the watch where extreme heat exist, like laying the watch on your cars dashboard or other places where light and extreme heat exist, +140F, doing so can damage the watch/battery so be careful.

Fit and finish
First let me state I am completely happy with how this watch looks, feels and performs.

The only area where I personally think this watch could be improved upon is the band/strap. I have approximately 7 3/4 inch wrist, average size I believe, and the band barely fits me having to using the last strap hole. The band is a military green canvas color and is very ridged, at least at first wearing it. I have read it softens up, breaks-in, in a week or two of wearing it and become normal to the feel.

Final core-reaction

The Citizen Men's BM8180-03E Eco-Drive is an affordable great little watch which looks and performs near perfect and barring neglect can serve many years of operation without any maintenance. Set it and forget it. Some people with wrists larger than 7 3/4-inches may want to find a more suitable watch strap/band.
